Time in Range

An important metric that goes beyond HbA1c

Time in Range is a metric that complements HbA1c and provides actionable information for you and your patients. It helps you quickly assess patients’ glucose, contextualise their HbA1c and increase their Time in Range.

What is Time in Range?

Time in Range is the percentage of time per day a person spends within target glucose range. The FreeStyle Libre systems automatically calculate the percentage of time your patient spends in, above, or below target range.

The International Consensus sets clear targets for Time in Range1.

Recommended Time in Range for most people living with T1D, T2D who are not pregnant, older, or at risk:

Why is Time in Range Important?

  • Every 10% increase in Time in Range can lower HbA1c by 9 mmol/mol in type 1 and type 2 patients2

  • Every 5% (~1 hour per day) increase in Time In Range has positive impact on your patients’ glucose control1

  • Spending more Time in Range can reduce long-term eye and kidney health complications3

  • Easily visualise Time in Range and set clear targets for your patients with the FreeStyle Libre Portfolio

Improved %TIR is associated with reduced risk of long term complications of diabetes

Increased %TIR can be associated with reduced risk of diabetes related macrovascular4, kidney3 and eye3 disease, as well as better peripheral nerve function5

HbA1c has limitations

HbA1c reflects average glucose over the last 2–3 months; it does not show glycaemic excursions of hyper- and hypoglycaemia.1

An increase in Time in Range results in a decrease in HbA1c1.

Time in Range & The FreeStyle Libre Systems

The FreeStyle Libre 3 app8 or FreeStyle LibreLink app6  will automatically calculate the percentage of time your patients spend in, above or below target range. This will help identify where your patient needs more support in managing their overall diabetes health.

This Time in Range report shows a person who spent 75% of their day in target glucose range:
